Avalanches form when disturbances, such as blizzards, dislodge a large mound of snow. Avalanches are caused by weather that makes the snow unstable. Earth tremors, heavy winds, and explosions can also cause avalanches.

If the crystals in a new layer of snow are cohesive, or "sticky," and form bonds with the layer below, the snow won't slide. If the bonds between the crystals either within or between layers break, the snow will begin to slip.

there are also man made avalanches where scientists throw dynamite on to the mountain to dislodge extra snow to prevent avalanches from happening
ReplyDeleteAvalanches affect people and the enviroment by crushing villages and causing power and water supplies to get cut off. They also destroy forested areas so that animals no longer have their homes. If people or animals are in the path of the avanlance, they bury them alive and can crush them.
